Hivernacle
The Hivernacle is a modernista building inside the Parc de la Ciutadella, adjacent to the Castell dels Tres Dragons. It was designed by Josep Amargós i Samaranch and has been placed on the list of Cultural Assets of Local Interest. It is also part of Barcelona's art nouveau or modernista heritage.
The Hivernacle is a vast iron structure with glass sides. It was built between 1883 and 1887 and consists of three sections with understated decorations. You enter via the open-sided central section. The coat of arms of the city of Barcelona is displayed inside and outside the building.
Although the Hivernacle was designed to grow tropical plants, during the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exhibition it was used as a reception and lecture hall, just like the shade house, the Umbracle.
